You’ve heard about the benefits of breast milk for babies, but are you aware that infant formulas are made for different nutritional needs? There are different types of infant formula available, ranging from concentrated liquids to powders. Your family doctor will likely recommend using a cow milk-based formula. Many of the formulas are fortified with iron, and some have very little. Most doctors recommend that you use the iron-fortified variety.
Cow Milk-Based Infant Formulas
There are several types of formulas on the market, including cow and soy-based varieties. Some formulas are fortified with soy protein, which is a good substitute for cow’s milk, depending on your baby’s needs. Unless your baby has a serious allergic reaction to cow milk, it’s safe to switch to soy-based formula. Some doctors may recommend switching from cow milk-based to soy-based formula if you think your baby needs the added iron. However, it’s not recommended for babies who are preterm or have low birth weight.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that you use cow milk-based infant formulas for the first few months of your baby’s life Cow milk-based infant formula products. While many babies are perfectly fine with cow milk-based formula, there are a few who do not, and you should consult with your child’s pediatrician if you suspect you’re using cow milk-based formula for your baby.
