Garage Door Opener Adjustment Basics

A basic way to check your garage door opener is to adjust the travel limit screws. These screws are easily accessible and are often found on the back or left side of your opener. If you have a Chamberlain or LiftMaster model, they will be located near the security light cover. You can turn the screw counterclockwise and left-to-right to adjust the door’s travel limit. If the door is too low or too high, turn the screws clockwise.

Next, look at the limit adjustments. This is the screw you turn to regulate the stopping points of the door. Make sure to use a flathead screwdriver to change the limit adjustment settings. The motor may be shut off if you continue to operate the opener during the procedure. In some cases, the door will reverse if it travels upward or downward. It is best to check the settings for these before attempting any adjustments.

To determine if the garage door opener has the right limit settings, you must turn the adjustment screw in the appropriate direction. Most brands allow two to three inches of adjustment for each full rotation. You can also check the limits by closing the wall mount garage door opener and reopening it to make sure they match. Be careful not to increase the limit set too high or too low because it may cause the motor to shut off. You can also try adjusting the limit adjustment screw to the other side of the opener.

When you need to adjust the limit settings, you need to open the door and close it. The limit adjustment screw is often the easiest part of the opener to work with. Using a flathead screwdriver, you can change the limits up or down. Just be sure to check the level of tension on the screws before turning them.
